How to maintain your drains
06-Apr-2020
Maintaining your drains is one of those tasks most of us forget to do or simply brush off because we don’t want to do it. However it is easier than you think and only takes a few steps to keep them clean.
When it comes to a clogged drain there is usually a quick simple fix to the problem, without having to use supermarket chemicals.
For drains that may be moderately clogged or have bad odours pour ½ a cup of baking soda followed by ½ cup of vinegar.
Once you have done this there will be a reaction of foaming and sizzling, don’t worry this is supposed to happen. After all the baking soda is dissolved run boiling water down the drain to rinse away the vinegar residue.
Drains that run slowly are usually a result of a build-up of grease. A similar process for clogged/ smelly drains can clear the grease. Pour ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of salt down the drain followed by boiling water. Then let this sit overnight.
In order to maintain your drains it’s important that you:
-Don’t leave or allow hair to enter your drains.
-Treat your drain at least monthly with a hot water rinse to prevent build up
-Don’t empty food, coffee grind, fats or oils down the drain
-Use a chemical based cleaner only if natural means of unclogging don’t work
